For our paper and wood products, it is key that they are compostable, biodegradable and food safe, without this they are not fulfilling the need to be environmentally friendly and improve the position from single-use plastics. We rigorously test our products to make sure they adhere to these requirements.
Utopia always looks to make sure all products that are supplied adhere to the highest industry standards. We understood the need to have tests to prove that our paper straws meet the standards that the market expect when moving from single-use plastic. The appropriate certification for this comes in the form of an EN 13432:2000, The full information on this can be found here. The certification is specifically focused on compostability and makes sure the paper straws adhere to strict standards to make sure the straws give back more good than bad to the earth when they biodegrade. The testing process takes at least 6 months to complete and is rigorous in adhering to standards of compostability. We are delighted to confirm we have achieved this certification for the non-metallic straws in our range.
For paper to be environmentally friendly it needs to adhere to the Forest Stewardship Council certification, which gives customers the option to choose forest products like paper and wood that have been sourced in an environmentally-friendly, socially responsible and economically viable manner. FSC was founded in 1993 in response to concerns about deforestation. All our wooden stirrers and paper straws all have been FSC sourced.
